Join Renee Sherrer of Social Fabric Art for an afternoon of self-reflection and creativity in this assemblage sculpture workshop inspired by Io Palmer’s installation, Meander. Upon viewing Palmer’s work, Renee couldn’t help but think of all the detritus, thoughts, and bits of our time and energy which make up who we are.
In this workshop, create a Bits and Bobs Expression of Yourself using upcycled materials that combine into a portrait of you. The wire frame will be the starting point, but what you assemble is unique to each artist. Sort through bins of collected items from Social Fabric to find bits and bobs that speak to your spirit. Or bring your own objects to include such as photographs and treasured small items. Once you have gathered elements that express your identity, it is up to you to tell a story through the placement and relationship between each bauble. We’ll have wire, thread, ribbon, string, small objects to attach, and all kinds of ways to create a playful projection.
Renee Sherrer is the owner of Social Fabric, couture designer, artist, instructor, and sewist. She has been working with textiles, specifically sewing, since she was 8 years old. She has taught a variety of subjects from sculpture to dyeing, drawing, fashion design and sewing at a long list of schools. She created Social Fabric to expose people to the myriad of textile and sewing arts which are so under exhibited in a smaller community like Bellingham.
Class registration includes a materials fee that covers assemblage objects provided by Social Fabric. Class fees also include admission to the Whatcom Museum. This is the final day to view the exhibitions, Meander and myself inside your story.
All workshop registrations are final and non-refundable, but you may transfer your spot to another person by notifying us in advance.
